Native to the Himalayas and much of East Asia the Skimmias are wonderfully adaptable, evergreen shrubs that will happily grow in virtually all locations including seaside industrial and heavy shade thus bringing colour to the dullest of corners! Skimmia japonica Rubella has been granted the RHS Award of Garden Merit, it has abundant clusters of attractive red buds that last all winter then open in April and May to white flowers with yellow stamens. The very fragrant flowers are held well above the foliage. Skimmias are dioecious which means male and female flowers are produced on different plants so the male ones as you might expect will not produce berries. It also follows that there would need to be a male in the vicinity to pollinate a female otherwise again no berries! Skimmia j. Rubella is a male variety. See our other listings for female varieties or message us if you would like advice. Easy to grow in most alkaline to neutral, moist, soils and a semi to full shade. Grows well in chalky soils. Can be used in a mixed planting or as a stand alone specimen in the garden or can easily be grown in a pot or container. When growing in a pot or other container. Use a good quality John Innes compost as this plant will be there a long time and peaty types of compost eventually degrade and become too packed and choke the roots. Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer.
