Native to the Himalayas and much of East Asia the Skimmias are wonderfully adaptable, evergreen shrubs that will happily grow in virtually all locations including seaside industrial and heavy shade thus bringing colour to the dullest of corners! Skimmia confusa Kew Green is one of the best Skimmias for flowers and is an RHS Award of Merit winner. It is one of the most compact forms, but still produces abundant large clusters of attractive light green buds on stems held above the foliage that last all winter, then open in May and June to white, very fragrant flowers with yellow stamens. Skimmias are dioecious which means male and female flowers are produced on different plants so the male ones, as you might expect, will not produce berries. It also follows that there would need to be a male in the vicinity to pollinate a female, otherwise again no berries! Skimmia c. Kew Green is a male variety. Granted the RHS Award of Garden Merit it is easy to grow in semi or full shade in a moist neutral to alkaline soil. Grows well in chalky soils. Can be used in a mixed planting or as a stand alone specimen in the garden or can easily be grown in a pot or container. When growing in a pot or other container. Use a good quality ericaceous John Innes compost as this plant will be there a long time and peaty types of compost eventually degrade and become too packed and choke the roots. Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 8-9 month applied in the early spring. One application gives all the nutrients the plant requires for the whole year. John Innes is a soils based compost. Can be used as an excellent high quality hedging plant. This listing is for well established, multi stem plants approx. 20cm tall exc. the pot.
