Hydrangea macrophylla sub group Hortenisa (mopheads). Perhaps one of the best known garden plants. Originally from Japan, these robust and reliable plants produce a truly amazing display in summer and autumn. Hydrangea macrophylla Sabrina is a stunning vigorous variety that was bred by D. Van Der Spek of the Sidaco BV in Holland in 2002. It has white petals with red edge, dark red new growth. Large, attractive dark green leaves with a distinct red flush in spring and autumn and masses of large mophead shaped flowers of beautiful white edged red/pink in alkaline soil or lilac blue in acid soil. If you have an alkaline soil/compost, treatment with Hydrangea bluing agent may change the flower colour depending on how alkaline the soils is. Very easy to grow in a slightly shaded location in reasonable quality, moist soil. It can be grown in the garden or in a pot or container. In containers use a good quality compost. Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 8-9 month applied in the early spring. One application gives all the nutrients the plant requires for the whole year. A vigorous grower that will need pruning. After flowering, prune back to close to the old wood. If the plant becomes too large, a more drastic pruning can be undertaken!
