Albizia julibrissin ‘Tropical Dream’ Common Name: Persian Silk Tree / Silk Tree Albizia julibrissin ‘Tropical Dream’ is a stunning deciduous small tree or large shrub prized for its exotic appearance, graceful umbrella-shaped habit and masses of fluffy deep pink flowers. The species Albizia julibrissin is native to a wide area of south-western and eastern Asia, including Iran, China, Korea and Japan. It was introduced to the UK in approximately 1745, following its introduction to Europe by the Italian nobleman Filippo degli Albizzi, from whom the genus takes its name. 'Tropical Dream' is a modern, compact selection that produces finely divided, fern-like green foliage and an abundance of vibrant pink powder-puff flowers. Flowering begins in July and continues through September, often lasting for several weeks during a warm summer. The flowers are lightly scented and highly attractive to bees and other pollinating insects. This cultivar has been recognised by the Royal Horticultural Society and is listed by the RHS as Albizia julibrissin Tropical Dream ('Pos 1'), noted for its long flowering season, compact habit and suitability for smaller gardens and containers One of the most fascinating characteristics of all Silk Trees is their sensitive foliage. The delicate leaves fold closed at night and during wet weather, earning the plant the nickname "Sleeping Tree". This unusual feature adds further interest long after the flowers have faded. Position and Growing Conditions For best results, plant Albizia 'Tropical Dream' in a full sun position. A warm, sheltered location against a south- or west-facing wall is ideal, particularly in cooler parts of the UK. The more sun the plant receives, the better the flowering display will be. Plant in well-drained soil, including loam, chalk or sandy soils. It will tolerate acidic, neutral or alkaline conditions provided drainage is good. Once established it is remarkably drought tolerant and prefers soils that are moist but free-draining, rather than consistently wet or waterlogged. Garden and Container Growing Albizia 'Tropical Dream' can be grown successfully in a garden border or as a striking specimen in a large patio pot. When growing in containers, use a good-quality loam-based or multipurpose compost with excellent drainage. As Albizia is a relatively hungry plant, inadequate feeding can result in poor growth and reduced flowering.
